Friday Night:
I was scheduled to be in Story Wars, a game that the wonderful gower was running (with help from some others). I played Claire Bennet - which meant I spent most of Wednesday night cutting out fabric for a cheerleader skirt(*) and most of Thursday night sewing. I did not get enough sleep - and thus arrived at the con sleep deprived....wheeeee!(**)
Luckily Story Wars was not an incredibly serious larp, but an incredible blend and mash-up of stories and genres - so the sleep deptrivaion worked out.
The game was a complete blast! I saw a lot of friends during game. Awesome roleplay, wonderful genre mixing, and I got to taunt Arnold Rimmer. The Red Dwarf fan in me was well pleased. The sum total of information on the plot sheet was astounding -- and yet I still got most of my character's goals completed, talked with Rodney McKay, helped cure Darth Helmet and Scorpius....so, yay! I had some really good interactions with folks (old and new) both during and directly after the game.
My only real regret during game was not spending more time talking to folks like hazilya and jabba, and other folks I knew...
I rather spaced after game that we were having a party in the room I was sharing with tpau and hcougar; even though I brought supplies for it with me to the con.
Things I learned, re-learned or realized Friday night:
-Short skirts can be empowering.
-I like random plots and strange connections (I knew this but the game reaffirmed this for me)
-Gower writes awesome games
-I know many awesome people and there wasn't enough time
-Tpau is a good friend; hcougar is my friend;
-Vodka is my friend
-While I already knew this, no one should try keep up with Gordon when he's drinking.
-Sheena may or may not be secretly greek.
Randomness ensued.
The night devolved into much silliness and I did not get to sleep until after 4:30.
Saturday morning:
Up again by 9 the next morning so as not to miss breakfast; where I learned:
Vodka is *not* my friend(***).
Saturday afternoon-evening:
I rested for a bit and then went into Across the Sea of Stars, playng Enthalpy Green, which was a 10 hour game running from 2pm until 12am. Yeep. It was a good game but not quite what I expected and I still don't know how I feel about the game.
I like it more and more in retrospect; but it wasn't quite what I was expecting...really I expected more inter-player intrigue than I got given my character history, but that might have been somewhat dependent on player interpretation. Also strangely the one player who came off as skeevy to me during play; actually came off skeevy to me when not in a game...so umm...huh and stuff. Still there was some good hang out time with some folks I quite like and a random new friend or two made, so overall, a win. The game was at least entertaining most of the time.
Plus the large Klorn in the background was awesome and some of the vignettes were downright hilarous- I wish I had wound up in more of the light and fluffy ones. I also had some problems understanding the intention of the GMs with the game mechanics - usually this is pretty clear but what we did with knowledge or could do with knowledge/skills from the site of the in game conference was not clear to me; plus the value of the political favours was not clear and I wish I had traded some of them earlier. On the plus side, the game did make arrangements for us to get some down-time/break for dinner and made sure we were fed. I'm really not sure why I didn't like the game more at the time except for maybe the class of expectations vs. reality or the length of the game. I know that the sheer length of the game was taxing on many of the players.
Late Saturday evening:
I wanted to dance - but I was in the exhausted stage of the con, so I wound up sitting down with several groups of people and having some great conversations....Then I finally got around to dancing and shortly thereafter to bed
Sunday:
Wonderful morning brunch and more socializing and then off to game. I was in Plan 8 from Outer Space as the Marketing Director. The game worked well enough, but the administrative assistant needed to be drawn in a bit more. Then con wrap-up, and then a small dinner with friends at Friendly's, which was just the thing, and then a group of us went to see the Watchmen at the nearby theatre. Then finally home.
So overall, a good Intercon -
met some cool new people. some of whom I may remain in contact with - some of which I expect to never hear from again despite exchanging contact info - but who may be familiar next year at the next Intercon.
Random highlights from the con:
-Embarassing Greer
-Seeing several friends I never see
-Intense silliness
-and many more I can't recall at the moment as it's almost 2 in the morning. I had a fantabulous time. If you by any chance you met me at Intercon, feel free to drop me a line.
(*) Which came out surprisingly well - as in people thought I had bought it. As I don't sew often, this pleased me to no end.
(**) Lack of sleep sometimes pitches me into hyper to compensate. I think its one of those, if I stop moving, I'll fall asleep things, much like if a shark stops swimming, it will die.
(***) Vodka is in fact a passive aggressive little b*tch that stabs you in the back, or in this case more appropriately the stomach, when you aren't looking. Ugh. This is why I don't drink it often.
