grrrr...landlords

redfishieWell the fourth of july was great and a lot of fun. Helped Tersha and Jon move into their new house in waterveliet. It's a nice place but I wonder how all their stuff is going to fit. I got into Amherst in time on Wednesday to go to the 11 o'clock meeting that had been tenatively planned in my lab. got their, learned a little...stayed until about 1:30 or so and went home. Came into my house to discover 1)the futon Alexis had lent was gone 2)the futon Mike had given us was gone 3) someone I discovered after much searching had taken my microwave from the corner area (tucked out of the way) in the front hallway and put it downstairs 4)my dustbuster had been moved to the back of the house 5)my plants had been put outside (I don't think it was a good area for them either) 6)a box I had been packing that had been in the hallway had been put in my room along with some other things that had been put in it 7) another box that was in part of the hallway was put in sharon's room. 8)no one was around and there were no notes.
Turns out my landlords came over the 4th with no prior notice, took their excess furniture, and OUR futons, and moved a bunch of things around...some of them for no good reason.
The futons they took: one was a nice wood one probably worht around $400 and the other was a cheaper metal one with two futon pads on it...maybe around $200.
I called them and asked for them back and they claim that the futons are theirs and that we have no proof their ours.
I went to talk to the Housing Authority. Turns out the burden of proof on ownership is theirs not ours. All their actions were highly illegal. no prior notice before coming over, moving tenants belongings in the house, taking tenants belongings. The excuses given were not justified and they should return the property.
It's a mess and I'm not sure what I'll do about it yet.
