I went down to PA for The Island larp this weekend.

The game was a mostly roleplay game with some boffer fighting thrown in – and a sort of hybrid version of fighting at that – some combat and an alternative version available for those who don’t like boffer combat, which I’m not sure fused together smoothly, but most people seemed happy with it,

I don’t know if it could have been done better – and I completely admit that my boffer larp biases are showing here.

I *like* fighting, and fighting in this arena had too much stoppage due to the rules. It just didn’t work seamlessly, and I’ve become very accustomed to a different style of fighting were suspension of disbelief is easier since everything blends in a bit more. I think the fact I never played NERO is also influencing this, as there were GMs running about with headbands on – which I’m also not used to.

Other aspects of the game were more real world than things I commonly run into – using real chemistry for example to simulate, *gasp* real chemistry and having some amazing props. The Minos props (a company mentioned in the game) were in particular very cool.

I like both boffer and roleplay larps, but there isn’t a lot of overlap in the people I know who play both types. I could go on about reasons for this other than lack of free time, but I’ll spare anyone reading this that. If you’re interested or want to bounce off theories drop me a line. Personally I love both, but for different reasons.

The game itself was cool, and I got to play an inquisitive archeologist with some angst, and a good angle to get involved in multiple things. A played off of people a bit, met a dead relative, and overall had a good time. Oh and most if not all of my character problems got solved, and I sailed away in a boat with lots of ancient coins, and some archeological finds.

The only other things of note, is that it was a good test trip pre-Pennsic.

Driving-
My neck tends to freak out after driving several hours due to a car accident where I had whiplash several years ago. Driving is one of the most stressful positions long term for neck pain. The amount of time I can go before serious pain has gone up over time, due to chiropractic care and other health aides, but I really need to know my current limits prior to heading to western PA --- as once the pain starts, it won’t stop for at least a day. I’d rather not be at Pennsic feeling like crap.

The time seems to be 3 hours on the inside of the range (pain begins but is ignorable) to 6 ½-7 hours being doable without significantly long breaks but definite pain affects. I pushed on fairly late last night without stopping for long as I really just wanted to get home. My neck and upper back were killing me by the end of it – so I didn’t sleep well and thus, my brain is mildly sluggish today.

Bedding–
I figured out I need to do something different than an air mattress. It’s just not working well for me anymore. I can cope if I cannot find something affordable prior to pennsic—but I’m going to be looking into rope beds and the like in the near future.

Tent-
I wound up using a wee-little tent, not my standard pennsic tent. Gah, I so have period tent lust. Canvas is so much cooler and breathe so much better than nylon. I just don't want or need a mondo-huge tent, and want something I can put up or take down by myself if needed.

Garb-
STILL have gotten almost no sewing done. that's the project for this week and next, but I'm not going to stress too much about it. I'll get done what I get done.

Not much else is new. Neck hurts, head hurts, but it’s getting better as my body loosens up and things shift a bit. It's so much better than a few years ago. :) I think I have a chiropractor appointment tomorrow at any rate.
