Joshue Bell with Jeremy Denk
Mar. 9th, 2008 09:35 pmThat was such an amazing show; the phrasing, the intonation, the soft quiet bits and the silence was masterful. The music was just powerful and uplifting, in a low building sort of way. During the last piece (Grieg, Sonata No.3 for Violin and Piano in C Minor, Op. 45) before the encores, I caught myself not believeing it was almost over. The time just flew.
The two performers were so complimentary to each other, neither upstaging the otyher, but a beautiful partnership of sound, motion, and punctuated silences.
Joshua Bell can make more sounds and intonations fly out of a violin than I thought was possibly; and Jeremy Denk was right there with him as a counterplay/counterpart. Absolutely amazing show. If you ever get a chance to see either Joshua Bell or Jeremy Denk in concert, do so.
The venue was also as always great; I love the Music Hall and the accoustics are just wonderful; I sat near the nicest older couple from the Hanover area --- she had the greatest little accent and their youngest son had gotten his PhD at Dartmouth (where my brother went).
The full show was about 2 hours with pieces from Tartini, Prokofiev, Dvorak, and Grieg. Just an amazing repertore and both performers were energetic, Josh's hair moved about as he played, and by the end of the show sweat was running down his face. (Jeremy Denk also had very cool faces anw body movements while playing with Josh). The encores were a Prokofiev piece that the title translated as something about a dream? and an arrangement Josh Bell had done of an Opera I'm unfamiliar with (something about 3 oranges? ?).
After the show I got into line for autographs and now have one of the publicity posters for the Music Hall with Joshua Bell's signature on it. :) It was really nice how they set up an area for autographs and how Josh was signing programs, etc.
Really just a great night, I feel like I can fly, It was so wonderful. I totally love live music performances.
