Feb. 19th, 2008 10:49 pmLyle Lovett is so wonderfully charming and funny in a quiet understated sort of way. The show was really quite funny; he and John Hiatt kept up this great banter throughout it, with Lyle taking an almost mock psychologist approach to things
"Now we're not here to talk about me John."
and the rambling had wonderful punctuations of silence and quiet comic timing.
The music was absolutely amazing. They were just playing together (Lyle didn't bring his large band) and helping each other out.
John played this song about Muddy Waters that made we cry with the beauty of its chord structure, the wording, and how he played. There was another one of his songs at the end that I will have to find later; I suspect it was one of his more popular ones as it was the last song he played.
Lyle also played Cowboy Man (which he apparently hasn't played in some time on tour, and its one of my favorites) and "If I had a Boat" when someone called it out towards the end of the show.
He got this cute little "Oh, why thank you for asking" and went into it. The big thing about him, is that he seems so utterly genuine....which is a rare quality in anyone let alone in a performer.
The last song he did was "She's no lady, she's my wife" :)
Great show. great performances, and even niftier is how close it was and how intimate. I was in the 6th row back on an aisle seat.
Yay music!
