There should be a word in the English language that describes the feeling of the sudden realization of unconsciously running from someone or something that you thought you liked; the sudden realization that a friendship is unhealthy for you. I feel sure there is such a word in German. It’s a language that builds words like scaffolding on buildings. It adds words together and meshes them, interlinked into a new word. It is a language where one word can be used to describe the feeling of guilt of having eaten the last piece of Black Forest cake. It is a language much more logical than our own.

There are problems with German though. I often wonder if this very logic defeats it. How do you dissect emotions, how do you logically attack them? If thought follows the form of the language that governs it, then how does one proceed in this arena? It explains much about the culture and the people. Germans are after all renowned for their engineering, and who in our country buys French cars? English is dynamic. It is such a hodge-podge of languages. It has been infused many times over with different cultures. French came to us several times. Nordic languages assaulted the English shores. It gives our language a flexibility. I do however believe that sometimes it is not enough.

Ultimately true communication between people is almost impossible. Cultural and individual interpretations aside from everything else. This may be why poetry was born. If it is the reason, than poetry is born oft times of equal turns frustration and beauty. Still it is sometimes not enough. Sometimes it is just too hard to convey what I am thinking/feeling/doing.

I am left tonight with a tangle of thoughts. I’ve been thinking of people from my past and of newly made friends. Today words fail me. However, this is not a sorrow, this is not frustration. I think that sometimes it is enough to simply be and try not to think so hard.
