I caught part of MTV’s “Real Life: I’m obese” last night. There was a 17 year-old kid who was planning on getting his stomach stapled. I felt for him. Obesity is a hard thing. It’s socially and emotionally devastating, especially at that age. However, he seemed to be putting all his hopes on the surgery as if it would magically fix everything. He wasn't willing to try to diet or exercise. There was no mention of him trying to do so in the past.
His mom was trying to get him to eat better, and he said he would after he got his stomach stapled. Well, yes, he'd have to, his stomach would be the size of a fist, and eating too much could potentially harm or kill him. He said if his mom didn't buy junk food, he'd get it somewhere else, and that he had an addiction.
I got news kid, major surgery is not easy nor is having to eat small amounts every few hours a quick fix.
I know people who have gotten their stomach stapled. The change is for the rest of your life. The results aren’t always the glowing ones you hear on talk tv shows. There are major side effects and what you can tolerate eating changes dramatically. You would be much better off to at least try to lose the weight naturally. Having your body organs tampered with is a major step.
I don't think he realized how hard it would be. Surgery should be a last resort.
There is no magic bullet. If you want something to improve in your life, you need to work at it. At least, I haven’t found a magic bullet. If someone else has please let me know.
What is it about our culture that people seem to think they should be able to just take a pill or press a button and everything gets better with no work? Why is this?
I feel like shows like this, and those blasted makeover swan shows do more harm than good. How does everyone else feel?
Edit: I just realized it's probably just a matter of time before someone dies on one of these makeover shows from the plastic surgery. Maybe then people will stop seeing plastic surgery as an easy fix and actually start weighing the consequences.
