bemusing weekend
Jun. 16th, 2003 06:20 pmFriday night found me with still WAY too much energy but before I could combat this, I had the inevitable crash of moods from not getting exercise soon enough. I decided to hang out with friends, and off I went to Gwenyth and Shaun's where we did watch Red Dwarf on DVD and cut out garb. And Lo, did Gwenyth offer to help me with my dress and then accidently cut something wrong; but it was good for the fix was better than the original plan and there was much rejoicing. Also there were pot stickers and salad..and much eating.
Saturday I was in a quandry because I didn't know where to go; Barton was out, but I was in no hurry to get to Investiture. I wound up going with Shawn to a Realms' game (the North-South war). The site wasn't too far from us and I was curious as I had always heard very mixed reviews of Realms as a larp. i figured I could go in garb and then proceed on to the SCA event. Realms bemused the heck out of me. I've been in larping situations before where the weapons and the combat made a lot of sense. I like boffer larps...but something about Realms just amused me and made me think it was fluffy. I strongly suspect it was the bridge battles. The set-up was just like SCA bridge battles....and I'm pretty sure the contrast in the amount of armour protection and the type of weapons is what made me not be able to take it seriously. It was too much like the SCA event I was about to go to and there was the role-playing element mixed into it enough.
This doesn't usually happen to me; as I said I generally like boffer larps...it was just something about the way it was set-up. I also tend to strongly be attracted to the role=playing portions of things when I do play; so that may have factored in as well.
After that I realized I didn't have my tent, went home, got it, turned around and drove back towards Concord to get to the event. i had several mishaps on the way involving not being able to get $ from the ATM machines....
Got to the event just as the fencing was breaking up. i'd confused the days of the tourney and the melees :(
I also got delayed enough by some other things that I completely missed court and a couple of the people I wanted to see get their awards.
I went to feast; hung around; made some new friends better friends (aka hung out more); hung out with some old friends;
I wound up in the de-facto Malagentian camp and Q declared me a Malagentian in exile...which was very sweet of him.
I was given a nice black and tan to drink; found bellydancers but failed to find drummers; ultimately the bellydancers danced to the guitar music. I eventually wandered off to my tent that I had pitched sometime earlier and fell asleep. I woke up at 3:30 shivering and realized my fencing jacket was at home; so i hopped back in my car and drove home; slept; got my jacket and came back to the event in time for the tourneys...
