I quit the gym today. It might be silly but it's the point of the matter. I joined less than a year ago and paid a one time membership fee of $90. My cost per month was $15 with no terms on it. It's a good deal. Then I started getting the fliers in the mail to bring a friend and have them join without a membership fee. That rankled a little, because about half of my office is a member and if I had not been new to the area I wouldn't have had to pay the $90 fee. But this happens. I wasn't too concerned. I went sporadically to the gym...it's convenience was nice with it's 24-7 access. It also had a personal trainer....who I somehow wound up misscheduling my first session with...and who wasn't that great. I somehow felt that maybe I wasn't quite the dynamic they wanted when I think back on it now...but it might have just been bad timing and miscommunication.
all was pretty much alright. I went when I chose to or had time.

My company managed to get a corporate account...Hoorah! The fee went down to $10/month wit this. New members have to pay a $29 membership fee. I found out that some people when they switched over their accounts were charged the fee, but a good chunk were not. I went to switch over and the gym tried to charge me another one time membership fee (this one of $29). It just irritated me...since I had been a member for less than a year and really just paid a one time membership fee and they claimed that they had to charge a fee b/c of the low monthly rate, but at the same time they regularly send around join today without a membership fee coupons and deals....which could be used to waive higher one time membership fees. no logic there.
so basically they wanted me to pay another 1 time membership fee for the privilage of staying a member...

In any event, I haven't gone to the gym much lately due to muscle pulls and winter. The equipment I can use easily there are the weights and the benches. I can't use their treadmills, and their bikes aren't the best for me. The recumbant bikes were good but they don't do much for you physically. The only real bonus was the elliptical machines that I could actually use and the nice ab and back benches. It's almost spring....I will be outside more..and I own dumbells....so if I find that I miss the gym, I will probably rejoin in the fall.
