redfishieI got the oddest urge today when i was in decathalon sports. I wandered in to buy new sneakers, found a nice pair of new balance trail runners that fit well (oh joy! oh bliss!) and went around the store for a bit. I walked towards the front of the store and for some reason turned down the last aisle....there i found field hockey equipment. I played field hockey when I was a freshman in high school but not for any real amount of time beyond that. I enjoyed it when I was on a team devoted a good amount of time to practice (we used to have 3-4 hour practices every day after school plus weekend practices and games).
One stick told me to pick it up and I did. It was the right size (36) and felt wonderful in my hands. I started playing with moving it back and forth and trying dribbeling motions (turning the stick one way then the other in your hands so that the flat portion of the head is always in contact with the ball). Now the odd thing is if you asked me a week ago or a year ago what size field hockey stick I took I wouldn't have known...but once it was in my hands I did. It was the right size and the only one on the rack on clearance sale (despite there being others like it). I suddenly really really wanted to play again. This field hockey stick wanted to go home with me. I had sit there for 10-15 minutes trying to talk myself out of buying it. I still want a field hockey stick.
I suspect that it may be some sort of response to getting a bit older or the fact I miss physical activity or something else of that nature. Thing is it was one fo the few field hockey sticks that size in the store....and I dind't wind up buying it. If someone asks me to be on a field hockey team tomorrow though since I didn't get it I may scream. I do want to do more sports though. I need to find a local soccer team or something of that nature. Fencing is wonderful but not as team orientated...even in melee circumstances.
