I HATE Splenda
Oct. 6th, 2004 07:32 amResisting urge to kill....
So i'm allergic to nutrasweet, aspartame, and Splenda also known as sucralose.
Now while Splenda is made from sugar, it is NOT sugar, as the body does not process it the same. Saying it's the same because it comes from sugar is a misunderstanding of its chemical nature...it's like saying wine is just like grape juice. Splenda is derived from sugar through a multi-step manufacturing process that selectively substitutes three atoms of chlorine for three hydroxyl groups on the sugar molecule.
There have been fewer studies on it than other artificial sweetners...and while those that have been done show results that aren't as bad as those for aspartmae there have been instances of a small percentage of the population having issues with it such as seizures, breathing problems, headaches, etc.
The bottom line is if your body won't absorb it and rejects it, it probably isn't good for you. Here are some related links on this:

Different research will tell you different things about how bad artificial sweetners are...some people still claim aspartame is healthy...all I know is that both give me bad reactions.
My allergic reactions generally are of the....god I'm tired and itchy and feel like I'm coming down with a cold kind. I become lethargic, and I get bad headaches to the point of not being able to think clearly. My lungs are generally affected too, so I feel like it's harder to breathe. I've been feeling this way for most of the week...but there's a really nasty chest cold going around my office so I thought nothing of it.
As I was eating my Thomas' English Muffins (Hearty Grain variety) this morning I looked on the label of ingredients because they claimed to be 100% whole wheat. I was sitting puzzling over this claim when there's corn flour in them as well (on the outside) when I noticed the last ingredient was sucralose aka Splenda. ARGH!
No wonder I've been feeling like complete crap the last few days and my eyes have been itchy! What the hell is an artificial sweetner doing in my regular old english muffins???? Why in all heck wasn't this labeled as a light product?
I'm used to them labeling anything with these products in them as Lite or lower calorie...so I don't need to worry about every label. arghhhh!!! The worst part about this is I know I just ate something I'm allergic to.
