i was watching PBS last night and was half listening to a show on the chabannes children in france - jewish children who were saved in a small french town during WWII. One of the people who was briefly on the show looked familiar....he was one of the few english speakers; There was something about him that rang bells off in my head that this was a very nice man (and I didn't quite remember why I knew this to be true).

i thought at first he was some old movie star because of it; that maybe it was all charisma etc. - but he wasn't. His name was Norbert. I was looking at this man on the tv screen, convinced at any moment they'd say he was famous for something in the mass media and all would be explained. This wasn't quite the case - He's a polymer scientist and the head of the NSF.

I had also met this man at some point and spoken with him briefly while I was a graduate student. I don't believe he was quite so higly ranked at the time - but he was still fairly high up there in the ranks of the NSF. I met him at some sort of party function at UMASS (?), my first year as a graduate student through my advisor. Now that I think about it, I believe she mentioned him a good deal of the time when the NSF came up and he was a very pleasant man. [For those uniniated NSF = National Science Foundation, very big important science agency and key source of funding for many research projects. To have an NSF funded project is a boon as a grad student.]

All I will say it was a nice piece they did on the school and it's always odd when people you know or sort of know wind up in serious pieces on tv. My 9th grade english teacher was a titanic scholar and he wound up being all of a 60 minutes special on the titanic when the movie came out....when i saw that at home at the time I fell off my bed.
